FEEL THE FEAR… AND DROP THE MASK!

Halloween is the one time of year when we deliberately hide behind a mask. Witches. Vampires. Superheroes.
We put them on for fun and take them off at the end of the evening.
But what about the masks we wear during the other 364 days of the year?
The ones that are much harder to spot.
The ones designed to protect us from a fear that many high performers carry around with them:
“What if I’m not good enough?”
One of the most common things I notice when coaching leaders and business owners is that their greatest challenge is rarely capability. It’s the protective strategies they’ve developed to avoid feeling exposed.
Here are 3 common masks that my Brighter Thinking coaching clients reveal that they frequently wear:
The Perfectionist Mask
This mask whispers:
“Don’t submit it until it’s perfect.”
“Keep checking.”
“Keep refining.”
“One more tweak…”
The problem?
Perfectionism often looks like high standards on the surface, but underneath it can be a fear of judgement.
If it’s never finished, it can never be criticised.
The People Pleaser Mask
This mask says:
“Say yes.”
“Don’t disappoint anyone.”
“Avoid conflict.”
“Keep everyone happy.”
For a little while, this can feel safe.
Then your diary becomes full of commitments you never wanted, your energy drains away, and resentment quietly moves in. Everyone is happy except you.
The Overachiever Mask
This one is particularly sneaky. It tells you:
“Work harder.”
“Achieve more.”
“Keep proving yourself.”
“When you reach the next milestone, then you’ll feel successful.”
Except the finish line keeps moving.
The promotion arrives.
The business grows.
The goal is achieved.
And yet the feeling of ‘enough’ never quite catches up.
Why We Wear Them
From a neuroscience perspective, your brain’s primary job is survival.
Anything that feels like rejection, criticism, embarrassment or failure can trigger the brain’s threat response. So we develop protective behaviours.
Not because we’re weak. Because we’re human.
The challenge is that what once protected us can eventually limit us.
The very mask designed to keep us safe can stop us being authentic, courageous and fully effective.
Take off your mask
Ask yourself: Which mask am I wearing most often right now?
Then experiment with removing it just once this week.
If you’re wearing the Perfectionist Mask:
✅ Submit the report when it is good enough.
If you’re wearing the People Pleaser Mask:
✅ Say no to something that would normally earn an automatic yes.
If you’re wearing the Overachiever Mask:
✅ Allow yourself to celebrate a success before chasing the next goal.
Or, perhaps your challenge is even simpler:
✅ Admit that you don’t have all the answers.
Most people will respect your honesty far more than your performance.
A Question For Reflection
If you knew that you were already enough, which mask would you no longer need to wear?
Have a wonderful Halloween, and remember:
The greatest freedom comes not from putting on a better mask, but from having the confidence to take one off.
