NEW YEAR: where are you starting from?

Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed a lovely break over Christmas and that you now feel raring to go in 2016: energised, happy and excited about this Olympic year ahead.

In many countries, the start of a new calendar year naturally signals the opportunity to reflect on what went well over the last twelve months and recalibrate towards our life goals. There is hope and optimism of renewal, especially if you are located in the Northern Hemisphere and currently in winter. However, the sudden plummet in temperature may bring on a period of hibernation!

I am not a fan of resolutions, deprivation (especially when it is cold and the brain and body needs extra fuel to keep warm!) or making sweeping gestures that “everything” has to change – immediately. Yes, many areas of life may need addressing, however, generally if these are tackled all at once; giving up the good intentions and new habits is far more likely, because the brain gets overwhelmed. One of the hardest things for your brain is NOT to do or think something. Disagree with me? Do NOT think of a purple elephant with pink spots.

Call me psychic; however I know exactly what you thought of just then. You may have imagined it in your head before then crossing it out, realising that you weren’t supposed to be thinking about the aforementioned colourful mammal.

So if you are considering what you would like 2016 to be all about, instead of following the crowd (or taking up a diet or exercise plan designed for someone else!) create your year bespoke for you. This is what I do with my clients. There is no one size fits all approach.

In order to this, I strongly recommend that first explore what you are happy with in your life:

What are you satisfied with?

What is working well?

What are you doing on a regular basis (daily / weekly / monthly) that contributes to your happiness and wellbeing?

Next, think about what else you would like in your life or like to achieve, that will enhance your life even more?

Experience tells me that whatever you wish to add in, it will probably lead to e.g. more love, more fun, more life purpose, more time relaxing and more satisfaction and self-esteem. If it is more money that you desire, then this is generally a catalyst to help you have more of any or all of the above.

Of course, you may want help to consider how to make changes to your life and yes, this is where I can stretch and challenge you to work out your exact starting point and create compelling, motivating goals, transform your thinking and take powerful action to support you to get what you want faster – and with less stress.

2016 is the year of the Brighter Thinking Breakthrough: when you finally achieve what has so far eluded you. Are you ready?
